Hair loss can result from heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or medications — but both men and women can now achieve thicker, healthier hair with platelet rich plasma (PRP) derived from their own blood.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment where blood is drawn — similar to a routine blood test — then prepared using a centrifuge to produce a concentration of plasma rich with platelets and growth factors. PRP has been used for decades in various medical disciplines to repair and regenerate damaged tissues. A multitude of studies in the medical literature demonstrate that platelets contain growth factors that strengthen hair and prevent hair loss. PRP is especially effective for combating thinning hair and is ideal for both men and women suffering from hair loss or a receding hairline.
Upon arrival at Healthy Skin Centre, your medical history will be taken along with photographs of your scalp. A nurse will draw blood from a vein in your arm — similar to a routine blood test. Your blood is then processed in our centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, growth factors, and white blood cells, which are injected into your scalp using very tiny needles, meticulously following your hair loss pattern. The PRP stimulates inactive hair follicles to enter the active growth phase. The entire procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.
Three to four PRP sessions in total — one every four weeks — are recommended for optimal results. To maintain results, repeat sessions may be required every 6–12 months. Studies have shown a significant increase in the rate of hair growth between the third and sixth months after treatment, with hair density peaking at approximately 3 months.
The first thing most patients notice a few weeks after PRP treatment is a decrease in hair loss. Over the following months, you will notice thicker hair in the areas of treatment. Many patients begin seeing visible improvement by the third session, with cumulative benefits continuing afterward.
Patients with thinning hair — but not total baldness — are the best candidates for PRP treatments. Studies have been conducted in men and women suffering from mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia (hereditary male or female pattern baldness) wishing to improve the quality and fullness of their hair. PRP cannot treat complete baldness, as hair follicles need to be present to be stimulated.
There is minimal discomfort during treatment. We recommend taking Tylenol before your treatment and ensuring you are well hydrated. At Healthy Skin Centre, we ensure your comfort using cool air, vibration, or a local numbing cream for sensitive patients. Most patients report no pain following treatment.
We recommend avoiding the following for at least 7 days before your treatment, as they increase the risk of bruising: ASA, NSAIDs, fish oil, garlic, and wine. We also recommend drinking at least 1 litre of water and being well hydrated in the 24 hours before your PRP treatment. Do not stop ASA if you are taking it for a medical condition as recommended by your doctor.
You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. We recommend taking a warm shower to stimulate your scalp and circulation approximately 12–24 hours after treatment. You may apply gels to your scalp 24 hours after your PRP treatment, but avoid harsh chemicals and dyes for at least one week. Some bruising may occur and will resolve naturally.
